Wild Berries

Picking wild raspberries

The Latvian side of my family gathers every year around the Summer Solstice. It’s always been a huge celebration in Latvia, called Jāņi, dating back to our sun-worshipping roots. When my grandparents passed away, they wanted us to the keep the tradition alive and pass it along. We come from all corners and sit under a giant curly willow tree on the top of a ridge overlooking the cornfields of Amish country. Everyone’s busy talking about the year’s events, while wine and beer are being consumed in weekend proportions. A dip in the pool, a discussion about politics, a trip through the field with my cousins to the wild raspberry bushes.
